In Spring 1723 under Peter I, the emperor’s, decree the construction of the biggest rail-making plant in Russia started on river Iset banks. A dam was set to restrain the powerful river stream. Near the dam plant workshops and a church were erected and straight streets with dwelling houses were stretching. Mighty defensive buildings were surrounding the new settlement from all sides. The date of the city’s birth was November 7th (18th ), 1723, when the battle hammer was tested in workshops. In Katherine I, the empress, and St. Martyr Katherine, the patroness of mining trades’, honour the fortress-plant was given the name Ekateriburg. The real St. Katherine’s name is Dorothea. She was born in 294 in Alexandria and studied philosophy, rhetoric, poetry, music, mathematics, astronomy and medicine in a heathen school. A Syrian Monk converted her to Christianity. After having been baptized she got the name of Katherine. When in early IV century during Emperor Maximinus’ rule the Christians were persecuted Katherine announced her faith in God in public and was executed for that. According to the legend, after the execution angels carried Katherine’s body to the top of the highest mountain Sinai that was named after her.
The whole process of building in Ekaterinburg was carried out in concord with the overall plan worked out by a graduate from Academy of Artillery Kutusov, who came from Olonets plants. The first overall plan of Ekaterinburg testifies to the best patterns of fortress-building art in Germany, the Netherlands and France, according to which the city on Iset river was being built. The European character of the city is reflected not only in its name (German "burg" means "city" in Russian) but also in the city structure.
Ekaterinburg was planned as the capital of the plant-mining region that spread on the vast territory on both sides of the Ural range in two parts of the World – Europe and Asia. Ekaterinburg plant itself in early years was at excel in its technological equipment in comparison with other metallurgical plants not only in the country but also all over the world.
In 1725 The Monetary (Platny) Yard was open in Ekaterinburg. It was the main chaser of Russian copper money for 1,5 century. In 1726 Lapidary Factory was built and it became the supplier of articles made of Ural semi-precious stones in St.-Petersburg and many other European countries.
Empress Katherine I gave Ekaterinburg the name and Katherine II in 1781 gave it the title of the city. During Katherine II’s rule the main road of the Russian Empire was constructed through the young city. To the West of Ekaterinburg it was called Moscow Highway and to the East – Great Siberian Highway. So Ekaterinburg became the link to the boundless and rich Siberia, the "window to Asia" as well as St.-Petersburg was the "window to Europe".
In 1807 the title of the capital of the plant-mining region was confirmed by giving it the status of the Russian only "mountainous city". Up till 1863 Ekaterinburg was subjected to the head of Ural mining plants, the financial minister and the Emperor himself. It was free from governor’s power. In 1830s Ekaterinburg became the centre of mechanical engineering. The production of mining and metallurgical equipment, water turbines and steam engines was set at state and private factories.
Since 2001 traded representation "Malvina Ural" has been working in Ekaterinburg.
